Steering Shaft
Steering Shafts and U-Joints
Detroit Axle carries replacement steering shafts for specific vehicle applications where fitment is available. Our inventory includes intermediate steering shafts and lower steering shafts designed to connect the steering column to the rack, pinion, or gear box. Fitment is currently limited to select models, so please verify compatibility for your vehicle before ordering.
Current inventory is limited. We carry steering shafts for the Kia Sedona (2002). For other vehicles, call 888-583-0255 or email [email protected] to inquire about availability or special order options.
Steering Shaft FAQ
What is a steering shaft and what does it do?
The steering shaft connects the steering wheel to the rack and pinion or gear box. It contains a universal joint or CV joint that allows the steering angle to change as the suspension moves. A failed shaft causes vibration, clunking noises, or loss of steering control.
What are the signs of a bad steering shaft?
Clunking or popping noises from underneath the steering column, vibration that travels up the steering wheel, or a feeling of play or looseness in the steering are typical signs. A sudden loss of steering response or a stuck steering wheel indicates immediate failure and requires urgent replacement.
What is the difference between intermediate and lower steering shafts?
An intermediate steering shaft connects the steering column to a lower shaft or directly to the rack. A lower steering shaft connects further down the steering linkage, typically at the rack input or gear box. The type you need depends on your vehicle’s steering architecture. Check your repair manual or contact us for clarification.
Do steering shafts come with U-joints?
Yes. Detroit Axle steering shafts ship complete with universal joints or CV joints integrated, ready to install without additional parts.
How fast do you ship?
Steering shaft orders ship in 2-4 days on all orders. Call 888-583-0255 or email [email protected] if you need help confirming fitment for your Year/Make/Model.
What warranty covers your steering shafts?
Many Detroit Axle steering shafts are backed by a 10-year warranty. Check each product page for warranty coverage on that specific shaft.
