Rack and Pinion FAQ
What are the signs of a bad rack and pinion?
Leaking power steering fluid underneath the vehicle is the most obvious sign. You may also feel play in the steering wheel, notice wandering steering, or hear clunking noises when turning. Hard steering that worsens on turns also indicates rack failure. Check for visible fluid leaks before tearing into the steering column.
What types of rack and pinion systems does Detroit Axle offer?
We carry both electric assist power steering racks and fully electric steering units. Electric assist racks use a hydraulic system with an electric boost motor. Fully electric racks integrate the motor directly into the steering mechanism. Check your vehicle type to order the correct unit.
What other steering components should I check?
While the steering is apart, inspect the tie rod ends and rack and pinion boots. If the boots are torn, replace them. Worn tie rods should also be replaced to ensure balanced steering response.
Do I need special tools to replace a rack and pinion?
Most rack and pinion replacements require standard hand tools. Some vehicles may need a specialty tool to remove the steering column or intermediate shaft. Check your repair manual for the specific requirements before starting the job.
How fast do you ship?
Rack and pinion orders ship in 2-4 days on all orders. Call 888-583-0255 or email [email protected] if you need help with fitment or installation specs.
What warranty covers your rack and pinion assemblies?
Many Detroit Axle rack and pinion assemblies are backed by a 10-year warranty. Rebuilds with core exchange carry a lifetime warranty. Check each product page for warranty coverage on that specific unit.
